Environmental storytelling and sound design is at the core of what The Suicide of Rachel Foster does best. It is a rather large hotel, with three floors, a basement and plenty of Native American, Nature and Hunting décor. The Timberline just happens to be a hotel deep in the Montana wilderness. It is a walking sim/Adventure game through and through. Fancy a snack from the kitchen? It’s not a 5-star meal but sure. Curious as to what dwells in the basement and maintenance areas? Explore away. Want to explore the guest rooms? Go for it.

You are given almost free reign to explore the hotel as you see fit. Gameplay is focused on a singular task but you are in no way rushed to complete it. A walking sim that as the game title suggests, deals with some rather uncomfortable issues. As Nichole gets settled in, a mystery starts to brew and Nichole’s fascination leads her into a place she has been trying to escape.įollowing in the vein of Gone Home and Dear Esther, comes The Suicide of Rachel Foster.
Thankfully her old room is still there, along with a phone/radio that is a direct line to Irving, A FEMA employee. Despite her attempts, Nichole accepts that she is stuck in this place until the storm passes. Soon after her arrival, a winter storm that has been brewing has shut down all access to the hotel.
After the death of her mother, you are instructed by Claire’s last will and testament to inspect the family’s vacant hotel “The Timberline” in order to get it ready for sale Nichole is very much against this, her and her mother left the hotel and her father after her father had an affair with a girl named Rachel, who eventually committed suicide. Its 1993, you are Nichole, the daughter of Claire and Leonard.
